Seasonal Staple: Boots

Seasonal Staple is a recurring post series that features must-have closet pieces that you’ll utilize a’plenty.

Question: What’s the one piece in my closet that I miss all summer long?  Answer: BOOTS!

Every girl needs a good pair of boots (okay, if you live in Florida, maybe booties; it’s a stretch).  The keyword here is “good” – as in good quality, good design, and all around general ‘goodness’.  A “good” pair of boots will last you year after year.

Choosing your pair of boots is a perfect opportunity to really think about who you are and what your style expresses.  And since boots are a staple – and since most of us don’t have as many pairs of boots as we do, say, sandals – you must also focus on finding a pair that works with the other members of your stuffed winter closet.

Now, I admit, I have a few pairs of boots.  But my go-to staple is my pair by Michael Kors.  They are a camel suede that works well with my bright closet palette, and the base is wood (yes, wood!) which means that they’re going to withstand a few dark winters and days of sidewalk puddles.  The sole is finished off with a thick rubber, which makes them incredibly comfortable for walking, and ensures that I’m not going to meet any spills during the peak icy season.  (And if I do take a spill, the ankle is well-structured, to at least prevent a twist or a sprain.)  Did I mention that they are heels?  If you know me, you know that heels > flats, unless I’m chasing after my daughter. (Aside: my 18-month-old, whose favorite word is ‘shoes’, wore boots for the first time a few days ago, and her excitement is immeasurable.)

Heeled boots are also a nice reminder that this form of footwear doesn’t limit your choices to jeans and a cozy sweater (although, that’s certainly a great option!)  I personaly enjoy wearing boots with short dresses, a la Nicholas K.

I paired my boots with jewel-tone tights (one of my readers mentioned they loved my post on Emerald, but weren’t sure how to work similar tones in darker colors into their winter wardrobe – I hope this helps!), a yellow shift, and a white structured blazer.
